Q. How can I get rid of those white butterflies?
A. The Cabbage moth is generally only around from start of spring till Christmas. These pests are airborne and the only way to control them is to spray your patch with our Neem Oil mix. This can be done every 2-3 days to minimise infestations. Another suggestion is to cut out white plastic make pretend white moths by tying this white plastic to the top of a stick, making moths believe that there are too many moths feeding already and will keep flying to find there own patch.
Q. Can I grow lettuce all year round?
A. Yes, I like to grow Oak leaf and Cos lettuce all year round.
Q. How do I get rid of slaters without using chemicals?
A. To combat the slaters you will need to cut a yellow grapefruit in half and scoop out all the flesh. Then all you need to do is simply place halves around vegetable patch checking each morning for slaters underneath grapefruit halves. Scoop the slaters out and drown in a bucket of water or place into the bin.
Q. Is having my own veggie patch going to save me money in the long run?
A. According to the Australian Bureau of statistics, in 2003/2004 an average family spent $81.60 per month on shopping for fruit and vegetables. After installing your vegetable patch, it will cost you $70 a month to maintain your garden, saving you $11.60 on shopping. Over the past two years, consumers have become more health conscious and are more than likely spending more than $81.60 per month on fresh fruit and vegetables. Keep in mind that to buy organic produce at the grocery store is much more expensive than buying non-organic produce.
Q. When should I pick my tomatoes?
A. You can pick your tomatoes when they are ripe and ready to eat. This way the tomato will have its full flavour. You can pick the tomato when it is turning red but you may not get the full flavour. For information on when to pick vegetables see the Harvest Guide.
